BIOGRAPHY
Debra Ward BFA
I was born in Banff National Park, where my father was park engineer and ranger, and my mother an artistic free spirit. I spent most of my early childhood in the forests and coulees across Alberta and Saskatchewan and enjoy hiking out into the woodlands and
prairie to this day. Though I am a city dweller now, my heart is still firmly in the wilds and my paintings reflect my deep love of nature; a world I was born into and continue to find revealing. There is no richer vein of subject matter for me than nature
reflected in our shared humanity. The deep influence of origin and place and our fragility against natures’ forces informs all my paintings. My artistic expression has a long trajectory, originally in the form of dance and music, then on to diverse forms in art making. I paint mostly in oils, but also enjoy acrylics, monoprints, pastel, pen & ink, watercolor and Polaroid transfers. A lifelong love of reading has assisted me in drawing from the pool of creativity through literature, philosophy, science and history.
I have shown my work at the Alberta College of Art & Design, Calyx Distinctive Arts Show, The Willow Design Studio and in the annual solo show at my Kensington Studio.
My artwork is in private collections across Canada as well as corporate collections in Calgary and Edmonton.
